Before the current MTA system in Los Angeles,
the transit agency was the RTD, actually the Southern California Rapid Transit
District. This site is my "shrine" to the RTD as well as it's predecessor
agencies, such as the old LAMTA.
We will add route maps and other information from classic LAMTA and SCRTD
routes here.
14 (20)-Laurel Canyon Rd-Magnolia Blvd-Victory Blvd
14/20. 09/24/58 -
In 1958, Victory Blvd was served by Line 20.
14. 03/21/60 -
This is a very interesting route as it goes all over the place (like many
MTA local services during this era). The map also details Line 19 service
on Burbank Blvd. This map is from the Issue #2 schedule.
15-San Fernando-Olive View-Sylmar VA Hospital
15. 06/15/59 -
This is an issue #1 map which was a shuttle that ran from "downtown"
San Fernando to the Olive View "Sanitarium" and the former Sylmar VA
Hospital.
16-Vineland Avenue
16. 06/15/59 -
Long before the 152, Line 16 provided service on Vineland Avenue. This route
was designed to connect with the 86 and 93 in North Hollywood.
19-Burbank Boulevard
19. 09/24/58 -
This is a very short route between Downtown Burbank and Lankershim. Must
have served a purpose at that time. This map also details Line 14 service
on Laurel Canyon and Magnolia as well as Line 20 on Victory Blvd. This is
the Issue #1 map.
19. 03/21/60 - This revised map
shows Line 14 replacing Line 20 on Victory Blvd.
21-Culver City-Hollywood-Lockheed
22-Hollywood-Burbank
21/22. 06/15/59 - This is the issue #1 schedule for Line 21 and the
issue #3 schedule for 22. Like the 1960 schedule, this issue also features
the MGM gate with the caption "Gateway to Hollywood". (I think they
realized that the studio is really in Culver City).
21/22. 03/21/60 - "Gateway To Stardom",
the famous gateway to the MGM studios adorn the cover of this Issue #5 schedule.
Line 21 provided an interesting route between Culver City (Washington and
Motor) via Robertson Blvd and Wilshire Blvd (yes, there was a 21 that ran on
Wilshire back in 1960!), then through Hollywood then via a more familiar
route along Barham and Hollywood Way to the Lockheeed Air Terminal and
eventually terminating at the old Lockheed facility. Line 22 starts in
"Beautiful Downtown Burbank", operates through Universal City and winds
up in the heart of Hollywood.
24-Los Angeles-San Fernando
24. 09/24/58 - Issue #2 has a picture of a Lockheed Electra on the
front cover.
24. 09/11/60 -
LAMTA map features 24-S via Lockheed Air Terminal
(now Burbank Airport), 24-L direct via San Fernando Rd. and 24-G via "Glen Oaks" Blvd.
35-West Valley Freeway Express
35. 09/15/58 -
This is the Issue #2 of the West Valley Freeway Flyer. It mentions that the
route has been expanded to provide 7 morning and 6 afternoon trips.
Back in these days, the 35 was a peak only route and only ran on Reseda
as far north as Sherman Way. It would not be until the mid-70's that the
35 gets extended farther north.
35. 04/06/60 -
This is a larger file showing the route map from the Issue #10 schedule along with
an advertisement showing two angel-winged buses playing tug-of-war with a map of
Los Angeles with the slogan "The Freeway Flyer is Shrinking Los Angeles".
35. 12/04/77 - This schedule was from about
2 years after the route was extended to Northridge. This map would stay about the
same until the 425 comes around. Note the map detail around Reseda & Ventura.
Line 35 ran off-route school trips to Portola Jr. High located at Linnet & Rhea.
39-Los Angeles-Glendale-Burbank
75B. 07/21/58 -
In 1958, this section of route was operated via Line 75. In Downtown,
service would continue via 75-S via Olympic or 75-V via Venice Blvd.
56-Los Angeles-Sunland
56. 06/09/58 -
4 different flavors of the 56 back in '58. 56-L & 56-P via La Crescenta and
Pennsylvania Aves. respectively. There was also a 56-A which ran "half and
half" (half on the L and half on the P route). 56-V went to La Canada via
Ocean View and Foothill Blvd.

74 Van Nuys-San Fernando via Reseda/Sepulveda Blvd.
74. 09/01/58 -
"Suburban Living" is how MTA reflects SFV life in the late 50's. This is the
issue #1 map for the 74 and issue #2 for the 90. Due to the quality of the
scan, I have added route numbers to this map to make it a little more readable.
74. 10/30/60 - San Fernando State College (CSUN) is on the cover of
the Issue #7 schedule.
81 Ventura Blvd-Burbank Airport-Hollywood
81. 07/28/58 -
Detailing service via Ventura Blvd between Reseda Blvd and Hollywood.
Includes the 81-V operating directly on Ventura and 81-H operating via
the "Hatteras Maze". The Hatteras service would later be picked up
by Line 154 and then fades away in the late 70's.
81. 11/23/59 -
This is the map from issue 4. It shows the extension to Woodland Hills.
81. 06/19/60 -
Here's where the old 17 is joined with the 81 and the Ventura Blvd. service
now operates out to Pasadena. Notice that the Woodland Hills service is
gone.
81. 06/24/79 -
It's been to Pasadena, it's been to Chatsworth. In the 70's, the 81 went to
Burbank. After finishing up in Hollywood, the route will then double back
and head to Burbank Airport and Lockheed.
86-Los Angeles-Burbank-North Hollywood-Van Nuys
86. 09/26/58 - A picture of NBC's "Color City" appears in black and
white on the cover of this Issue #2 schedule.
86. 02/02/59 -
Before going out to the West Valley, the 86 used to operate to Pacoima.
87-North Hollywood-Studio City
88-North Hollywood-Van Nuys
87/88. 12/12/60 -
The 88 on this schedule is not to be confused with the Van Nuys Blvd. to the
Airport service that has eventually evolved into the 561. This 87/88 service
provided service from NoHo (connecting with the 93) to Studio City via Magnolia,
Colfax, Riverside, Laurel Canyon (87); to Saticoy and Lankershim (87) and to
Van Nuys via Tujunga and Vanowen (88).
90-Sherman Oaks-Van Nuys-Canoga Park
90. 09/01/58 -

Map for the original predecessor to what we used to know as the
"93-XS". A freeway flyer version of the 93 operating on Van Nuys Blvd.
and then going directly on the Ventura Freeway for Downtown.
154-Tampa-Ventura-Oxnard-Burbank
154. 03/11/79 - Here's a 154 schedule that
shows the "Hatteras Maze" taken from the old 81-H and then eventually washed into
oblivion in the early 80's.

162. 03/11/79 - Even more interesting

and take a look at the older 162 map and look very carefully for a blunder in Burbank.
240-Reseda Boulevard
240. 09/28/86 - When the 424/425 replaced
the 150 on Ventura Blvd., the 240 became a stand-alone route on Reseda Blvd.
This is the original map from the 240. Notice that it does not use
Burbank & Yolanda as the layover.

LAMTA Transit Map of SFV 1958-1960
REC Transit Original - This is a map of the routes
that existed in the SFV during the years of 1958-1960. Please note that it was
overlayed on a modern map so there are many freeways on this map that wern't
around in 1958. Enjoy it! (Warning: The file is huge - over 230K)
PE Van Nuys-Birmingham Motor Coach Route
02/01/44 -
During the war, Pacific Electric operated this motor coach route to
connect the Van Nuys Rail Line with the US Army Birmingham Hospital
(now Birmingham High School) and the "United States Metropolitan Airport".
Also details the route of the Van Nuys rail route and other connecting
motor coach services.
The "original" Foothill Transit
Foothill Transit -
Before there was a "Foothill Transit" in the East San Gabriel Valley, the
City of Los Angeles operated a dial-a-ride service for residents of Sylmar,
Lakeview Terrace and Sunland/Tujunga. Eventually, RTD Lines 90/91 were
extended to serve this area with fixed route service. This is a map from an
un-dated RTD publication.
81/93-Rose Bowl/Rose Parade Service from the SFV
81/93. 01/01/80 -
There was a time when there was money to do this thing called "Special Event
Service", providing special service to special events. With the exception of
the Hollywood Bowl (which has it's own funding source) and the modifications
of existing local services to serve race tracks, the Special Event Service has
become extinct. Here is a timetable from the New Year's Day 1980 operation.
